DRAKE [Surnames: AMSLEY, DRAKE, MYERS, PARLIN, SNYDER] DRAKE, STEPHEN A. A prominent citizen of Canton, and president of the Canton Coal Company, he was born in Canton, May 18, 1864, and is the son of George W. and Mary E. (Amsley) Drake, he was born in New Jersey in 1840, and she in Pennsylvania. George W. Drake came to Illinois with his father at an early date. He engaged in the grocery business with his father, who died in 1867. Stephen A. attended school in Canton, and has been identified with the coal industry. The Canton Coal Co. was organized in 1888 with William Parlin, and S. A. Drake as its first board of directors, until 1894, since then the mine is operated by S. A. Drake and W. D. Myers. He is also director of Homestead and Loan Association of Canton. He married May 17, 1890 to Aureline Snyder, who was born and schooled in Canton, and is the daughter of David W. Snyder of Canton. He is a Democrat, and an officer of the A.F.& A.M. and belongs to the K.T. Commandery, Mystic Shrine, the K. of P., B.P.O.E, and the Order of Eagles.
